What to wear for a “CEO Photo session” Representing your look in the best light

There are a lot of stereotypes, do’s and don’t’ about what to wear for a photo shoot. Some might say that it is not a good idea to wear narrow stripes, busy patterns or layers of the same color because the camera does not pick them up well. We say throw these old ideals out of the window, it is an outdated way of thinking and it’s not a problem for a modern camera anymore. If you want you can wear it (and of course if it represents the style of the shoot)!

A few general tips:

  • Make sure your clothes are pressed and clean

  • Try new clothes on before photoshoot

  • Do not wear baggy, bulky, saggy or otherwise ill-fitting clothing

What to wear?

There is definitely no right answer to this, it will all depend on the following questions:

1. What these photos are for? (Why am I doing it?)
2. What are my personal preferences (style)?
3. How do I want to look on camera?

Let’s go through those questions together.

1. What these photos are for?

First, of course, you have to know and understand what these photos are for and where you plan to use them. It might be for your LinkedIn profile, for your company website, a new job you are applying for, or simply for yourself. You have to know your audience and what is appropriate or expected in those circles. Do your homework! For example, if it is a conservative law firm, then obviously a good suit would be a better fit than a t-shirt and jeans.  In one word you have to understand the environment around you when you are deciding on which outfits to bring to a shoot. Of course if your life and work require you to be conservative and casual at the same time, bring different varieties of clothes and the photographer can capture and show the different sides of you.

2. What are my personal preferences?

By this we mean that when you are thinking of what to wear to a shoot always rely on your own stylistic and individual preferences; you know yourself best! You might have your own favorite color that you would love to see on photos or you know that a midi length skirt fits your look better. Follow your own instincts and preferences, in the end you might be disappointed if you haven’t listened to yourself and your instincts when it comes to representing your individual and unique style.

3. How do I want to look on camera?

You will always have to consider your goals when you pick a perfect outfit. This is not just a photo shoot, but an investment in yourself and in your future! Don’t be shy, gather inspiration, and invest in yourself - even if that includes an outfit that you might’ve never bought before, but that you absolutely love, this is the opportunity to wear it! Through the camera, this is the opportunity to open and transform yourself, with the goal to open new professional doors, dreams, and opportunities!

If you are still hesitant on what to wear, we put together some looks for you to take a further look and be inspired!

START MODELING

Everything you need to know on how to become a model

- What is a Model Test?

A model test is like a fun and professional photoshoot adventure where the main goal is to capture all your amazing features. We're here to showcase your beauty, personality, and camera skills and turn them into stunning photographs. Model tests aren't just for seasoned professionals; they're also perfect for beginners who want to kickstart their modeling journey. In fact, these initial test shoots are where beginners gain valuable experience and end up with beautiful photos that can launch their careers. Even experienced models benefit from occasional tests to keep their portfolio up-to-date. It's essential because, in this industry, your look can change over time due to different hairstyles or other factors, and having current photos is crucial to impress potential clients.

- What are model Polaroids / Digitals / Casting folio?

Model Polaroids or Digitals (sometimes called Casting Portfolios) are all about simplicity and showcasing the real you in a friendly way! These photos are taken against a clean, white background, and you'll have a fresh, makeup-free face. There's no need to worry about posing or styling – it's just you being yourself! These digital or polaroid shots typically include full body, face, and 3/4 profile images to give everyone a clear picture of your natural charm.

EXAMPLES OF MODEL POLAROIDS/DIGITALS

- How often are Test Shoots completed?

If you're just starting out in the modeling world, it's quite common to do test photoshoots about once a year, at the very least. As you grow, your appearance and the way you present yourself in front of the camera can evolve. Clients always want to see the latest you when considering you for their projects; it helps them match their vision. Plus, these test shoots are fantastic for your growth because they allow you to try new things and gain more experience in front of the camera.

- What clothes should I prepare for a test shoot?

When preparing for a model test, it's great to go for a neutral wardrobe – this way, the focus remains firmly on you, the star of the shoot! Remember, the main aim here isn't to create a high-fashion look; it's all about showcasing your natural beauty and unique personality. The goal is to capture the essence of you as an individual: your unique style, your ability to strike a pose, and your comfort in front of the camera.

To achieve this, consider sticking with monochromatic colors and keeping things minimal. Less is more when it comes to testing! If you're still uncertain about what to bring to the shoot, here are some friendly suggestions:

  • A simple white or gray T-shirt

  • A classic white shirt

  • Comfortable jeans or denim outfits

  • A plain, single-colored swimsuit or a very minimalistic one

  • A well-fitting black dress or another favorite dress of yours

  • Black tights or leggings

  • A blazer or a jacket

  • Any clothes that highlight your unique figure

  • Don't forget some stylish high heels to complete the look!

WARDROBE IDEAS

- What makeup should be done on a test?

Opting for a natural makeup look is usually the top choice for a test shoot. This is because both clients and modeling agencies want to see your authentic facial features and unique beauty. It helps them figure out how to best showcase your look for various projects. Of course, it's perfectly fine to have different makeup styles in your portfolio, but your main photo should have a wonderfully natural and minimal look that truly captures the essence of 'you'.

- How should I prepare myself for a test?

There's really no need for anything extraordinary. Just focus on getting a good night's sleep and making sure you're feeling well-rested and relaxed (the camera has a way of picking up on that!). If it's your first photoshoot, feel free to do a little research on posing, and don't forget to practice in front of a mirror. A bit of extra practice and preparation can only make things better!

- What will I do with the photos after?

f you're considering a career in modeling, it's a great idea to submit your photos to modeling agencies. Before you do, take a moment to read through the agency's submission requirements. Different agencies may ask for various types of photos. Some might request headshots and full-body shots, while others could ask for polaroids if you're submitting online. Some agencies might not have specific requirements at all!

If a modeling agency gets in touch with you, remember to bring all your photos from the shoot. You can easily preview them on your iPad or have them printed—whatever works best for you!

- Which agencies should I contact?

It really varies depending on your location and personal style preferences. We'd be happy to suggest a few reliable agencies that align with your interests

- What is the best way to connect with model agencies?

There are a few friendly ways to do it:

  1. Online: Most agencies have online submission forms or contact pages with their email addresses. Always make sure to check their specific requirements for the photos you need to submit.

  2. Open Calls: Some agencies host open calls once or twice a year. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce yourself in person and meet professional model bookers. Your personality matters a lot here because it's a chance to show how well you interact with others. Be confident but not overly pushy. To stay updated on open call announcements, follow their social media pages or check their website frequently. Agencies usually announce open calls a day or two in advance to manage the number of attendees.

  3. Networking: Being part of the fashion circle can also lead to agency opportunities. Network with industry professionals and spend time with people in the fashion world. The more you immerse yourself, the greater your chances of being noticed or having someone you know introduce you to a modeling agency. In bigger cities, this is often easier to do. Engaging with designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, and fellow models can lead to collaboration opportunities if you bring something unique to the table. In a nutshell, don't just wait at home to be discovered. If you're passionate about a modeling career, take those initial steps on your own. Believing in yourself is the first key to success!

- Why don't agencies always respond to submissions?

There can be several friendly reasons why an agency might not respond promptly. The most common reason is that your look might not match their current requirements. It doesn't mean you're not good enough; different agencies seek various looks based on their client needs. Some may be interested in edgy high fashion, while others prefer a more commercial look. Another possibility is that they already represent individuals with a similar appearance and can't sign you at the moment.

Also, sometimes agencies receive a high volume of submissions, which can delay responses. They typically keep your work on file, so feel free to send updated portfolios as your skills grow.

The best advice? Don't get disheartened if you don't hear back immediately! Keep applying, keep improving, and keep updating your portfolio. Success in this industry requires hard work, time, and dedication to your craft!
